Arvith

The order of Arvith: recite the Shema with its blessings before and after, join redemption directly to the Amida, and pray standing. When finished, sit briefly before leaving. One who adds supplication after Arvith is praiseworthy.

The time for the evening Shema is from יציאת הכוכבים until עמוד השחר.

Before praying, one washes the hands with water up to the wrist, first reciting the blessing ‘Al Nĕṭilath Yadhayim (“concerning the washing of the hands”), and only then prays.

Beginning of Prayer

Adhonay ṣĕvaʾoth 'immanu, misgav lanu ʾĕlohe ya'ăqov sela. Adhonay ṣĕvaʾoth, ʾashre ʾadham boṭeaḥ bakh. Adhonay hoshi'a, hammelekh ya'ănenu vĕyom qarĕʾenu.

Adhonay of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold, Selah. Adhonay of hosts, happy is the one who trusts in You. Adhonay, save us; may the King answer us on the day we call.

wĕhuʾ raḥum yĕkhapper 'awon wĕloʾ yashḥith, wĕhirba lĕhashiv ʾappo wĕloʾ ya'ir kol ḥămatho. Adhonay hoshi'a, hammelekh ya'ănenu vĕyom qarĕʾenu.

But He, being merciful, forgives iniquity and does not destroy; often He turns His anger away, and does not stir up all His wrath. Adhonay, save us; may the King answer us on the day we call.

Blessed are You, Adhonay our God, King of the universe, who by His word brings on evenings with wisdom, opens the gates of heaven with understanding, changes the periods of time and varies the seasons, and arranges the stars in their watches in the sky according to His will. He creates day and night, rolling away light before darkness and darkness before light; He causes the day to pass and brings on the night, and separates day from night — Adhonay of hosts is His name. Blessed are You, Adhonay, who brings on evenings.

Therefore, Adhonay our God, when we lie down and when we rise we will speak of Your statutes, and rejoice and delight in the words of the study of Your Torah, Your mitzvot and Your statutes, forever; for they are our life and the length of our days, and on them we will meditate day and night. May Your love never depart from us. Blessed are You, Adhonay, who loves His people Israel.

Teach them diligently to your children, and speak of them when you sit in your house, when you walk on the road, when you lie down, and when you rise. Bind them as a sign on your hand, and let them be as frontlets between your eyes. Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

And if you diligently obey My commandments that I command you today, to love Adhonay your God and serve Him with all your heart and all your soul, I will give the rain for your land in its season, the early and the late rain, and you will gather your grain, your wine, and your oil. And I will give grass in your field for your cattle, and you will eat and be satisfied. Take care that your heart is not lured away to serve other gods and bow to them, for then Adhonay's anger will burn against you, and He will shut up the heavens so there is no rain and the ground will not yield its produce, and you will quickly perish from the good land that Adhonay is giving you. Set these words of Mine upon your heart and soul, bind them as a sign on your hand, and let them be frontlets between your eyes. Teach them to your children, speaking of them when you sit in your house, when you walk on the road, when you lie down, and when you rise. Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates — so that your days and your children's days may be many on the land that Adhonay swore to your ancestors to give them, as long as the heavens are above the earth.

Adhonay said to Moses: Speak to the children of Israel and tell them to make for themselves fringes on the corners of their garments, throughout their generations, and to put on the fringe of each corner a thread of blue. It shall be a fringe for you to look at and remember all the commandments of Adhonay and do them, and not follow after your own heart and your own eyes, after which you go astray — so that you may remember and do all My commandments, and be holy to your God. I am Adhonay your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt to be your God; I am Adhonay your God.

True and certain is all this, and it stands firm for us, that He is Adhonay our God and there is none besides Him, and we are Israel His people — who redeems us from the hand of kings, our King who delivers us from the grasp of all tyrants, the God who exacts payment for us from our foes and repays all who hate our very lives. He who set our soul among the living and did not let our foot slip, who led us upon the high places of our enemies and raised our standing over all who hate us. The God who wrought vengeance for us against Pharaoh, with signs and wonders in the land of the descendants of Ham; who struck all the firstborn of Egypt in His fury and brought His people Israel out from among them to everlasting freedom; who brought His children through the divided Sea of Reeds, while their pursuers and their enemies He sank in the depths. His children saw His might; they praised and thanked His name, and willingly accepted His sovereignty upon themselves. Moses and the children of Israel answered You with song in great joy, and all of them said: "Who is like You among the mighty, Adhonay? Who is like You, majestic in holiness, awesome in praises, doing wonders?" Your children saw Your sovereignty at the sea, Your kingship, Adhonay our God; together they all gave thanks and proclaimed You King, and said: "Adhonay shall reign forever and ever." And it is said: "For Adhonay has ransomed Jacob, and redeemed him from a hand stronger than his own." Blessed are You, Adhonay, who redeemed Israel.

We will thank You and recount Your praise for our lives that are entrusted into Your hand, for our souls that are in Your charge, for Your miracles that are with us every day, and for Your wonders and goodness at every hour — evening, morning, and noon. You are good, for Your mercies never end; You are compassionate, for Your kindnesses never cease — for we have always placed our hope in You. And for all these, may Your name, our King, be blessed and exalted and raised on high, always, forever. And let all the living give thanks to You, Selah, and praise and bless Your great name in truth, forever, for it is good — the God of our salvation and our help, Selah, the good God. Blessed are You, Adhonay, whose name is good, and to whom thanks are fitting.

My God, guard my tongue from evil and my lips from speaking deceit; to those who curse me let my soul be silent, and let my soul be like dust to all. Open my heart to Your Torah, and let my soul pursue Your commandments. As for all who plan evil against me, swiftly nullify their counsel and frustrate their plans. Let them be like chaff before the wind, with the angel of Adhonay driving them on. Accept the song of Your people; raise us up and purify us, awesome One. Act for the sake of Your name, act for the sake of Your right hand, act for the sake of Your Torah, act for the sake of Your holiness. May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable before You, Adhonay, my Rock and my Redeemer.

It is our duty to praise the Master of all, to ascribe greatness to the Author of creation, who has not made us like the nations of the lands nor placed us like the families of the earth; who has not made our portion like theirs, nor our destiny like all their multitude — for they bow to vapor and emptiness, and pray to a god who cannot save. But we bow before the King of kings, the Holy One, blessed be He, who stretches out the heavens and lays the earth's foundations, whose seat of glory is in the heavens above and whose mighty presence is in the loftiest heights. He is our God; there is none else. He is our King in truth, and there is nothing beside Him — as it is written in His Torah: "You shall know this day and take it to heart, that Adhonay is God in the heavens above and on the earth below; there is none else."
