Before Sleep

Upon getting into bed to sleep at night, one recites the blessing:

barukh ʾatta Adonay ʾĕlohenu melekh ha'olam, hammappil ḥevle shena 'al 'enay umeʾir lĕʾishon bath 'ayīn. yĕhi raṣon millĕfanekha Adonay ʾĕlohay, shettaṣṣileni miyyeṣer ra' umippegha' ra', wĕʾal yĕvahăluni ḥălomoth ra'oth wĕloʾ hirhurim ra'im, wĕthihyeh miṭṭathi shĕlema lĕfanekha wĕtha'ămidheni mimmenna lĕḥayyim ulĕshalom, wĕhaʾira 'enay pen ʾishan hammaweth. barukh ʾatta Adonay, hammeʾir lĕkhol ha'olam.

Blessed are You, Adonay our God, King of the universe, who casts the bonds of sleep upon my eyes and slumber upon my eyelids, and gives light to the pupil of the eye. May it be Your will, Adonay my God, that You save me from the evil impulse and from harm, that bad dreams and evil thoughts not trouble me, that my bed be whole before You, and that You raise me up from it to life and peace, and give light to my eyes lest I sleep the sleep of death. Blessed are You, Adonay, who gives light to the whole world.

One then recites the first paragraph of the Shema and goes to sleep. If overtaken by sleep, even just the first verse — or the verses of mercy — may be said first.

You shall love Adonay your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your might. These words that I command you today shall be upon your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and speak of them when you sit in your house, when you walk on the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign upon your hand, and they shall be a symbol between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
