Minha

The order of the Minḥa prayer: one begins reciting Tĕhilla LĕDhawidh (Psalm 145) while seated. Then one stands and prays the Minḥa prayer. When finished, one falls upon his face and supplicates; he raises his head, supplicates a little more, and takes leave to his affairs. (Rambam, Mishneh Torah, Hilkhoth Tefilla)

Minḥa’s time was set to correspond to the afternoon Tamid offering. Since the Tamid was ordinarily brought each day at the ninth and a half hour, that became Minḥa’s standard time — called Minḥa Qĕṭanna (“Lesser Minḥa”). But because on a Passover eve that fell on a Friday the Tamid was slaughtered at the sixth and a half hour, one who prayed from that hour onward was likewise held to have fulfilled the obligation; once that earlier hour arrives, the obligation to pray has already begun — this is called Minḥa Gĕdhola (“Greater Minḥa”). So Minḥa Gĕdhola runs from the sixth and a half hour to the ninth and a half, and Minḥa Qĕṭanna from the ninth and a half hour until an hour and a quarter remains in the day; either may still be prayed up until sunset.

Before praying, one washes the hands with water up to the wrist, first reciting the blessing ‘Al Nĕṭilath Yadhayim (“concerning the washing of the hands”), and only then prays.

A psalm of praise; of David. I will exalt You, my God the King, and bless Your name forever and ever. Every day I will bless You, and praise Your name forever and ever. Great is Adhonay and greatly to be praised; His greatness is unsearchable. One generation shall praise Your works to another, and shall declare Your mighty acts. I will speak of the glorious splendor of Your majesty, and of Your wondrous works. They shall speak of the might of Your awesome deeds, and I will recount Your greatness. They shall utter the fame of Your great goodness, and shall sing joyfully of Your righteousness. Adhonay is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and great in kindness. Adhonay is good to all, and His mercies are over all His works. All Your works shall thank You, Adhonay, and Your faithful ones shall bless You. They shall speak of the glory of Your kingdom, and talk of Your might, to make known to mortals His mighty acts, and the glorious splendor of His kingdom. Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and Your dominion endures throughout all generations. Adhonay upholds all who fall, and raises up all who are bowed down. The eyes of all look to You, and You give them their food in due season. You open Your hand, and satisfy the desire of every living thing. Adhonay is righteous in all His ways, and gracious in all His works. Adhonay is near to all who call upon Him, to all who call upon Him in truth. He fulfills the desire of those who revere Him; He also hears their cry and saves them. Adhonay preserves all who love Him, but all the wicked He will destroy. My mouth shall speak the praise of Adhonay, and let all flesh bless His holy name forever and ever.

Forgive us so that we may be redeemed; keep us far from pain, and let us feast on the pastures of Your land, [In the rainy season: and grant dew and rain,] gather our scattered from the four corners of the earth, and let those who stray from Your knowledge be judged; raise Your hand against the wicked, and let the righteous rejoice in the building of Your city, the restoration of Your Sanctuary, the flourishing of an heir for David Your servant, and the setting of a light for the son of Yishai, Your anointed. You are good, for Your mercies never end; You are compassionate, for Your kindnesses never cease — for we have always placed our hope in You. And for all these, may Your name, our King, be blessed and exalted and raised on high, always, forever. And let all the living give thanks to You, Selah, and praise and bless Your great name in truth, forever, for it is good — the God of our salvation and our help, Selah, the good God. Open my heart to Your Torah, and let my soul pursue Your commandments. As for all who plan evil against me, swiftly nullify their counsel and frustrate their plans. Let them be like chaff before the wind, with the angel of Adhonay driving them on. Accept the song of Your people; raise us up and purify us, awesome One. Of David. To You, Adhonay, I lift up my soul. My God, in You I trust; let me not be ashamed, let not my enemies triumph over me. Indeed, none who wait for You shall be ashamed; shamed shall be those who act treacherously without cause. Make me know Your ways, Adhonay; teach me Your paths. Guide me in Your truth and teach me, for You are the God of my salvation; for You I wait all day long. Remember Your compassion, Adhonay, and Your kindnesses, for they have been from of old. Do not remember the sins of my youth, or my transgressions; according to Your kindness remember me, for the sake of Your goodness, Adhonay. Good and upright is Adhonay; therefore He instructs sinners in the way. He guides the humble in justice, and teaches the humble His way. All the paths of Adhonay are kindness and truth to those who keep His covenant and His testimonies. For the sake of Your name, Adhonay, forgive my iniquity, for it is great. Who is the man who reveres Adhonay? He will instruct him in the way he should choose. His soul shall abide in prosperity, and his descendants shall inherit the land. The counsel of Adhonay is for those who revere Him, and He makes known to them His covenant. My eyes are always toward Adhonay, for He will free my feet from the net. Turn to me and be gracious to me, for I am lonely and afflicted. The troubles of my heart have grown; bring me out of my distresses. Look upon my affliction and my trouble, and forgive all my sins. Look at my enemies, for they are many, and they hate me with violent hatred. Guard my soul and deliver me; let me not be ashamed, for I have taken refuge in You. Let integrity and uprightness preserve me, for I wait for You. Redeem Israel, O God, out of all his troubles.

וְהוּא יִפְדֶּה אֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל מִכֹּל עֲוֹנֹתָיו.

wĕhuʾ yifdeh ʾeth yisraʾel mikkol 'ăwonothaw.

And He will redeem Israel from all his iniquities.

אחר כך הוא יושב ואומר Then, sitting, one says:

And we do not know what to do, for our eyes are upon You. Remember Your compassion, Adhonay, and Your kindnesses, for they have been from of old. Do not remember against us our former sins; let Your compassion come quickly to meet us, for we have sunk very low. Arise, help us, and redeem us for the sake of Your kindness. May Your kindness, Adhonay, be upon us, as we have hoped in You. If You should keep account of sins, Adhonay, my Lord, who could stand? For with You there is forgiveness, so that You may be revered. Adhonay, save us; may the King answer us on the day we call. For He knows our nature; He remembers that we are dust. Help us, God of our salvation, for the sake of the glory of Your name, and deliver us and atone for our sins for Your name's sake.

It is our duty to praise the Master of all, to ascribe greatness to the Author of creation, who has not made us like the nations of the lands nor placed us like the families of the earth; who has not made our portion like theirs, nor our destiny like all their multitude — for they bow to vapor and emptiness, and pray to a god who cannot save. But we bow before the King of kings, the Holy One, blessed be He, who stretches out the heavens and lays the earth's foundations, whose seat of glory is in the heavens above and whose mighty presence is in the loftiest heights. He is our God; there is none else. He is our King in truth, and there is nothing beside Him — as it is written in His Torah: "You shall know this day and take it to heart, that Adhonay is God in the heavens above and on the earth below; there is none else."
