Upon Waking
Upon waking at the end of one's sleep, one recites, still lying in bed:

My God, the soul You have given me is pure. You created it, You formed it, You breathed it into me, and You preserve it within me. You will one day take it from me and restore it to me in the time to come. As long as the soul is within me, I gratefully acknowledge before You, Adonay my God [and God of my fathers], Sovereign of all works, [Master of all souls]. Blessed are You, Adonay, who restores souls to lifeless bodies.
These eighteen blessings have no fixed order; rather, each is recited over the matter it corresponds to, at its proper time. For example: one who fastens a belt while still in bed recites "who girds Israel with strength"; one who then hears a rooster crow recites "who gives the rooster understanding." Any blessing whose occasion did not arise is not recited — one who slept in his clothes does not recite "who clothes the naked" upon rising; one who walked barefoot does not recite "who has provided for all my needs." On Yom Kippur and Tisha B'Av, when there is no washing, one does not recite the blessing for washing the hands, nor "who removes sleep from my eyes." One who did not use the bathroom does not recite "who formed man." And so for the rest of these blessings. It has become common in most of our communities to recite all of them one after another in the synagogue, regardless of whether their occasion actually arose — this is a mistake, and it is not proper to do so; a person should not recite a blessing unless its occasion has actually arisen.
Upon hearing the rooster's crow, one recites:

These are they:

To adjoin Torah study directly to its blessings, the following passages are read:

You are good and do good; teach me Your statutes.

May Adonay make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you. May Adonay lift up His face toward you and grant you peace. So shall they place My name upon the children of Israel, and I will bless them.
ʾellu dhĕvarim sheʾen lahem shi'ur. happeʾa, wĕhabbikkurim, wĕhareʾayon, ughĕmiluth ḥăsadhim, wĕthalmudh tora
These are the things that have no fixed measure: the corner of the field left for the poor, the first fruits, the pilgrimage offering, acts of loving-kindness, and the study of Torah.

These are the things whose fruit a person enjoys in this world, while the principal remains for him in the world to come: honoring father and mother, acts of loving-kindness, and bringing peace between one person and another — and the study of Torah is equal to them all.

It was taught in the school of Eliyahu: whoever studies halakhot [laws] daily is assured a place in the world to come, as it is said, "his ways (halikhot) are eternal" (Habakkuk 3:6) — read not halikhot ["ways"] but halakhot ["laws"].

One should always be God-fearing in private, acknowledge the truth, and speak truth in one's heart. Let him rise early and say: Sovereign of all worlds, it is not in reliance on our own righteousness that we lay our supplications before You, but because of Your abundant mercies. What are we? What is our life? What is our kindness? What is our righteousness? What are our achievements? What can we say before You, Adonay our God? Are not all the mighty as nothing before You, the men of renown as though they had never been, the wise as if without knowledge, and the intelligent as if without insight? For most of what we do is empty, and the days of our life are vanity before You, as it is written in Your holy words: "The advantage of man over beast is nothing, for all is vanity."

Therefore we are obligated to thank, praise, and glorify You, and to give praise and thanks to Your name. We are obligated to say before You every day, evening and morning, "Hear, O Israel: Adonay is our God, Adonay is One." Happy are we — how good is our portion, how pleasant our lot, how beautiful our heritage! Happy are we, who rise early and stay up late, evening and morning, and say, "Hear, O Israel: Adonay is our God, Adonay is One."

You alone are Adonay. You made the heavens, the heaven of heavens, and all their host, the earth and all that is upon it, the seas and all that is in them; You give life to them all, and the heavenly hosts bow down to You. You are Adonay the God, who chose Abram, brought him out of Ur of the Chaldeans, and named him Abraham. You are He, and Your years never end. Adonay reigns; Adonay has reigned; Adonay will reign forever and ever. Blessed is Adonay forever, Amen and Amen.
