Ḥănukka

The Days of Ḥănukka

In the time of the Second Temple, when the kings of Greece issued decrees against Israel, the Hasmoneans, a family of priests, rose up and saved Israel. On the 25th of Kislev they entered the Temple and found only a single jar of oil, enough to light for one day, and they lit from it for eight days. So the Sages established these eight days as days of joy and Hallel, when eulogies and fasting are not allowed, and lights are lit on each night (Rambam, Ḥănukka 3:1–3; Shulḥan 'Arukh, ʾOraḥ Ḥayyim 670:1).

Work is permitted on the days of Ḥănukka, and women have the custom not to work while the lights are burning (Shulḥan 'Arukh, ʾOraḥ Ḥayyim 670:1; Ben ʾIsh Ḥay, Year 1, Ḥănukka 27).

Every day the full Hallel is said with its bĕrakha, whether you pray alone or with a congregation. "'Al HanNissim" is added in the 'Ămidha and in Birkath HaMazon; if you forgot it, you don't go back (Rambam, Ḥănukka 3:5; Tĕfilla 2:13; Bĕrakhoth 2:6; Shulḥan 'Arukh, ʾOraḥ Ḥayyim 682:1, 683:1).

Lighting the Candles

The Obligation and How Dear It Is. The miṣwa of the Ḥănukka light is exceedingly dear: even a poor person who lives on charity borrows, or sells their clothing, to buy oil to light (Rambam, Ḥănukka 4:12; Shulḥan 'Arukh, ʾOraḥ Ḥayyim 671:1). Men and women alike are obligated, and one member of the household lights on behalf of everyone (Rambam, Ḥănukka 3:4, 4:1; Shulḥan 'Arukh, ʾOraḥ Ḥayyim 675:3). The core of the miṣwa is one light per household each night; the Sephardic custom is to add a light each night, so that on the eighth night eight are lit (Rambam, Ḥănukka 4:1–3; Shulḥan 'Arukh, ʾOraḥ Ḥayyim 671:2).

Oils and Wicks. All oils and wicks are fine, and so are wax candles, but the choicest way to do the miṣwa is with olive oil. You don't need a ḥănukkiyya or special candles: even a single small wax candle, lit at the right time and in the right place, and you have fulfilled your obligation (Rambam, Ḥănukka 4:1, 6; Shulḥan 'Arukh, ʾOraḥ Ḥayyim 673:1).

Where to Place Them. The miṣwa is to set the lights at the entrance of your home, on the outside, within a handbreadth of the doorway and on the left as you enter, so that the mĕzuza is on the right and the Ḥănukka light on the left. Maran writes to place them higher than three handbreadths (about 24 cm) and lower than ten (about 80 cm) above the ground (Shulḥan 'Arukh, ʾOraḥ Ḥayyim 671:6). If you placed them higher than twenty cubits (about 9.5 meters), you have not fulfilled the miṣwa. If you live upstairs, light in a window facing the public street. Lights are not lit inside the house except in times of danger, and even then they go near the doorway (Rambam, Ḥănukka 4:7–8; Ben ʾIsh Ḥay, Year 1, Ḥănukka 4).

The Order of Lighting (Custom). On the first night, place the light at the end farthest from the doorway. Each night, add a light on the side nearest the doorway and begin lighting from it, so that you move toward the right (Ben ʾIsh Ḥay, Year 1, Ḥănukka 4).

When to Light. Don't light before the sun sets, but right at its visible setting — neither later nor earlier. Once the time has come, don't eat or study until you have lit (Rambam, Ḥănukka 4:5; Ben ʾIsh Ḥay, Year 1, Ḥănukka 7; Ma'ăse Rav 235).

The Reason for the Law. Before sunset the light doesn't stand out, and once night has fallen dark it isn't noticeable that it was lit for Ḥănukka. So its time was fixed at sunset, when no one yet needs a light outdoors and its glow stands out. Some delayed lighting until ṣeʾth hakkokhavim (when the stars come out), following the view of Rabbenu Tam; but most of the world follows the view of the Gĕʾonim and Rabbenu for all the other times of the day, and there is no reason to treat this one differently. So the law at its core is to light right at sunset, and this is how the Vilna Gaon ruled as well (Rav Qafiḥ on Rambam, Ḥănukka 4:5, note 5; Biʾur HaGra, ʾOraḥ Ḥayyim 672:2).

How Long It Should Burn. Put in enough oil to burn "until the foot traffic has left the marketplace". This is a fixed measure of time, not a description of the street outside: about half an hour to an hour, depending on the view. If you lit it and it went out, you don't need to relight it. If you forgot and didn't light at sunset, you may still light as long as that time hasn't passed. Once it has passed, in Rabbenu's view you don't light, and in Maran's view you may light all night long; in practice, light without the bĕrakha (Rambam, Ḥănukka 4:5; Shulḥan 'Arukh, ʾOraḥ Ḥayyim 672:2; Ma'ăse Rav 236).

Not Using Its Light. You may not make use of the lights' glow, so there needs to be another light there to use instead (Rambam, Ḥănukka 4:6, 8). Nowadays, when the house is lit by electricity, no extra candle is needed, and this is the Yemenite custom (Siaḥ Yĕrushalayim); some have the custom of always adding a "shammash" (Ben ʾIsh Ḥay, Year 1, Ḥănukka 13).

Guests. A guest whose household is lighting for them at home doesn't need to light. If no one at home is lighting for them, they chip in toward the oil with their host (Rambam, Ḥănukka 4:11; Shulḥan 'Arukh, ʾOraḥ Ḥayyim 677:1).

'Erev Shabbath and Moṣaʾe Shabbath

'Erev Shabbath. Pray Minḥa first, and then light the Ḥănukka lights (Ben ʾIsh Ḥay, Year 1, Ḥănukka 20). The Sephardic custom is to light the Ḥănukka lights before the Shabbath light (Shulḥan 'Arukh, ʾOraḥ Ḥayyim 679:1; Ben ʾIsh Ḥay, ibid.), and the Yemenite custom is to light the Shabbath light first and then the Ḥănukka lights (Siaḥ Yĕrushalayim); each should follow their own custom. Put in enough oil to burn past sunset for the full measure of "until the foot traffic has left the marketplace" — about half an hour to an hour, depending on the view (learned from Rambam, Ḥănukka 4:5).

Moṣaʾe Shabbath. On Moṣaʾe Shabbath (Saturday night, once Shabbath has gone out), make Havdala over the cup first, and then light the Ḥănukka lights (Ben ʾIsh Ḥay, Year 1, Ḥănukka 21; Rav Qafiḥ on Rambam, Ḥănukka 4:5, note 5).

Bĕrakhoth of the Lighting

On the first night, say three bĕrakhoth before lighting; on the other nights, say two (Rambam, Ḥănukka 3:4; Shulḥan 'Arukh, ʾOraḥ Ḥayyim 676:1).

Before lighting, say:

barukh ʾatta Adhonay ʾĕlohenu melekh ha'olam, ʾăsher qiddĕshanu bĕmiṣwothaw wĕṣiwwanu lĕhadhliq ner [shel] ḥănukka.

Blessed are You, Adhonay our God, King of the universe, who has sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us to kindle the Ḥănukka light.

barukh ʾatta Adhonay ʾĕlohenu melekh ha'olam, she'asa nissim laʾăvothenu bayyamim hahem bazzĕman hazzeh.

Blessed are You, Adhonay our God, King of the universe, who worked miracles for our forefathers in those days, at this season.

On the first night, add:

barukh ʾatta Adhonay ʾĕlohenu melekh ha'olam, sheheḥĕyanu wĕqiyyĕmanu wĕhiggi'anu lazzĕman hazzeh.

Blessed are You, Adhonay our God, King of the universe, who has kept us alive, sustained us, and brought us to this season.

The wording "ner shel Ḥănukka" follows Rabbenu (Rambam, Ḥănukka 3:4); Maran and the Ben ʾIsh Ḥay write "ner Ḥănukka" (Shulḥan 'Arukh, ʾOraḥ Ḥayyim 676:1; Ben ʾIsh Ḥay, Year 1, Ḥănukka 2).

After lighting, say (Shulḥan 'Arukh, ʾOraḥ Ḥayyim 676:4):

We kindle these lights for the victories, the miracles and the wonders that You worked for our forefathers in those days, at this season, through Your holy priests. Throughout the eight days of Ḥănukka these lights are holy; we have no leave to make use of them, but only to look at them, so that we may give thanks to Your name for Your wonders, Your miracles and Your salvation.
